Instagram releases 2015's most popular hashtag, locations and people

Valentine’s Day was the most Instagrammed day, and Niagara Falls the most Instagrammed location in Canada this year, according to a year-end synopsis released Wednesday by the social sharing site.

Valentine’s Day ranked ahead of Halloween, Mother’s Day and New Year’s Day as the most Instagrammed days of the year. The only non-holiday/designated day to crack the top 10 was the April lunar eclipse, which was ranked No. 10 (Instagram did not disclose actual numbers).

Based on geotag data, Niagara Falls beat out three downtown Toronto locations (the Rogers Centre, Air Canada Centre and CN Tower) as the country’s most Instagrammed location. Other Canadian locations to make the top 10 included Vancouver’s Stanley Park, Whistler Blackcomb and Viex-Port de Montréal.

It was also a big year for Justin Bieber (@justinbieber), who gained more than 27.9 million followers – more than double the 10 million followers gained by Drake (@champagnepapi).

Another singer, Shawn Mendes (@shawnmendes), gained more than 4 million followers, followed by YouTube personality Lilly Singh (@iisuperwomanii), who gained 1.6 million followers and actress Emily Bett (@emilybett), who gained more than 800,000 followers.

Canadian celebrities that joined Instagram this year include Celine Dion, actress/model Marie Avgeropoulos, Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Jonathan Bernier, actor Victor Garber and country star Robby Johnson.

The most popular posts in Canada included Bieber playing with a young fan in a swimming pool (1.8 million likes), Drake being Drake (861,000 likes), Mendes on stage with Taylor Swift (634,000 likes) and a photo of electronica star Deadmaus in his trademark mask (53,600 likes).

Based on geotag data, the most Instagrammed locations of 2015 globally were Disney Properties, Universal Studios Properties, Times Square, Central Park, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, Dodger Stadium, Santa Monica Pier, Madison Square Garden and Red Square.

Taylor Swift accounted for five of the top 10 most liked posts globally, while Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner accounted for another three of the top 10. Pop star Beyonce’s picture with her daughter Blue was the fifth most liked post of the year, attracting 2.3 million likes.

The most commonly used hashtag on Instagram was #love, while New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, Easter and Mother’s Day were the most Instagrammed occasions. Non-holidays that were the most Instagrammed globally included the May 2 fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, the April 4 lunar eclipse, the January 24 beginning of #superstormjuno and Super Bowl Sunday.
