An arts organization is apologizing and promising to remove a billboard that some people found offensive to the gay community in St. John’s, N.L.
Opera on the Avalon was using the billboard to promote its upcoming production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
The sign on Bonaventure Avenue says the opera would have “more fairies than St. John’s on Pride Day,” in reference to the city’s annual gay pride celebrations.
Several people posted comments on the group’s Facebook page, calling the sign offensive and disheartening.
Opera on the Avalon issued an apology on Twitter and Facebook on Tuesday, adding that it is having the billboard removed.
It says the ad was meant to be tongue in cheek and was not meant to offend.
