Quarterly profits more than double to $1.3 million

Asian Television Network International Ltd., broadcaster to North America’s South Asian community, has reported a big increase in first-quarter profits.

The Toronto-based network said net income in the period was $1.3 million or five cents per share, up from $519,000 or a penny per share in the same 2010 period.

Revenue was not disclosed in a company release issued Tuesday.

“We are encouraged by the growth of our business and the trend this sets for the future,” said president an CEO Shan Chandrasekar.

ATN operates 33 television channels as well as the ATN Asian Radio on XM 159, the only satellite radio channel serving North America’s South Asian diaspora.
