The award-winning The Walrus magazine is taking on TV.

The publication has launched Walrus TV and WalrusTV.ca, designed to showcase programming based on its print content.

Walrus TV will air on Eqhd, part of a suite of four channels owned by High Fidelity HDTV.

In addition to programming inspired by the magazine, the channel will also feature Walrus Foundation events and debates.

Shelley Ambrose, executive director of the Walrus Foundation, said that the multi-platform venture is unique for a magazine such as hers.

Walrustv.ca launched with 27 documentaries, including a look at 30 years of AIDS, based on a cover story from the September 2011 issue, and The Meaning of Hockey, based on Stephen Marche’s essay in the magazine’s November 2011 issue.

About a dozen of those documentaries have also aired on Eqhd.
