A technology expert says it’s no surprise that BlackBerry maker Research In Motion has been ousted from the top spot in the Canadian smartphone market by Apple‘s iPhone.

A report compiled by Bloomberg and consulting firm IDC said the Waterloo, Ont. company shipped just more than two million BlackBerrys last year in Canada, compared with 2.85 million units for Apple.

As more and more companies invest in developing mobile products, knowing which devices are most-used by Canadians can mean the difference between a successful app and an un-downloaded one.

Queen’s University marketing professor and tech expert John Pliniussen said RIM now needs a powerful “one-two punch” of marketing and exciting products.

Pliniussen said how new RIM CEO Thorsten Heins handles the Canadian decline will provide a glimpse into his leadership potential.

The next-generation of BlackBerry smartphones isn’t expected out until later this year, leaving RIM with few new products to sell to consumers and corporate users.
