Industry Minister James Moore says wireless companies could lose rights to certain spectrum next year if it’s not being used as intended.

Moore said the government issued the licences to support fixed wireless services, which he said is the most affordable way to provide high-speed internet in rural areas.

He said the licence renewal policy outlined Thursday is consistent with the Harper government’s commitment to ensure consumers will have more choice, lower prices and better wireless service.

“Beginning in March 2014, 2300 MHz and 3500 MHz spectrum licences will be subject to renewal,” Moore said in a statement.

“Our government will only renew spectrum licences for those holders that have met all conditions of licence. Those that have not used the spectrum will lose it.”
