Canoe.ca is offering on-the-go news to Canadian cellphone users who have basic access to the Internet, through its news and content portal, Canoe.ca Mobile.

The site provides real-time updates in the news, sports, entertainment, technology, finance, travel and lifestyle sections, with content provided by its Quebecor Media Inc. properties. The portal will also include a special Canada Votes 2008 section from senior writers and editors from the Sun Media newspaper network. All content will be available in English and French.

“Our mission is to be the Canadian destination for news content, which means we need to be accessible on multiple platforms, and mobile is definitely the platform we were missing,” said Dominique-Sébastien Forest, general manager of digital content and e-commerce at Canoe.ca.

To access Canoe.ca Mobile, users text “CANOE” to 22022 or bookmark the “m.canoe.ca” URL using their mobile web browser function.

To enhance the user’s experience, Canoe.ca Mobile keeps the content pages light (about 6 to 25 kilobytes), which allows for faster download times, said Forest. It should also keep service-provider charges for data downloads to a minimum.

Canoe.ca is supporting the mobile site through its online networks.
