Pan Am Games make strong debut for CBC

One third of Canadians have watched at least some coverage to date

The Cirque du Soleil-produced extravaganza that opened the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games attracted almost 5.5 million viewers on Friday according to the CBC.

The opening ceremony attracted an average audience of 1.93 million viewers on CBC Television and CBC News Network, with the audience peaking at 2.3 million viewers at 9:07 p.m., as the Canadian team entered the stadium. CBC says that “new Canadians” comprised 20% of the audience for the opening ceremony.

The public broadcaster has maintained viewer levels through the competition’s early going, with more than 10.6 million Canadians watching at least some part of CBC/Radio-Canada’s coverage to date.

Saturday’s prime time coverage hosted by Scott Russell garnering an average audience of 1 million viewers, while its Pan Am Afternoon coverage on Saturday and Sunday averaged 630,000 viewers.

The broadcaster’s Pan Am website has attracted almost 1 million visits and nearly 4 million page views across its desktop and mobile versions and the CBC Sports App since July 10. As of Tuesday morning, the broadcaster has garnered more than 465,000 views across its digital platforms.

Sponsors for the Pan Am Games include CIBC, Chevrolet, Atoma, Loblaws, OLG, Esso, Maytag and Hotels.com.
