Cineplex Entertainment has climbed into the video-on-demand ring with the likes of Netflix, Bell and Rogers with a new VOD and “download to own” service from Cineplex.com.

“When Canadians think of movies, we want them to think of Cineplex,” said president and CEO Ellis Jacob, in a statement. “The best way to experience a movie is still in-theatre, but when guests want to enjoy the movie again, they can now choose from a variety of formats available from Cineplex.com, including digital downloads via our download to own or video on demand service, or on DVD or Blu-ray.”

Cineplex has offered DVD and Blu-ray discs for sale on its website since 2008.

While American brand Netflix has made a splash on this side of the border since launching its online service in September, Cineplex spokesperson Kyle Moffat sees room to differentiate Cineplex.com’s services.

“We are with the consumer from the start–[the website] is where they can buy tickets to see movies in the theatres–but another major aspect that sets our service apart from our competitors is our Scene points,” said Moffat. “Members can earn points from any purchase made on our site, which can be redeemed for free movie tickets or more rentals and purchases online.”

The marketing push behind the new service began in recent weeks with promo spots running before films at Cineplex locations, and will now also include a national online and radio buy and print ads in major English markets.

Cineplex is also offering a “buy one get one free” promotion until Dec. 31, where customers who purchase any regularly priced DTO movie will receive a second movie of equal or lesser value at no charge.
