The CRTC announced Tuesday it has slapped the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and its representative Union Calling with a combined $115,000 in penalties for violating its Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules.
According to the CRTC’s notice of violation, the CUPW made a series of robocalls to Ontario residents between May 21 and June 26 regarding possible closures or downsizing of post offices in certain communities.
According to the CRTC, the CUPW violated the rules by not identifying itself or providing contact information. The CRTC fined CUPW $50,000 and Union Calling $65,000.
“Canadians expect to know who is calling them, even when listening to a pre-recorded message,” said Andrea Rosen, the CRTC’s chief compliance and enforcement officer. “This is an important element of the rules governing the use of robocalls.”
