The CRTC is expected to release the outcome today of its investigation into the ownership of TV channels and websites by the country’s major broadcasters and telecom companies.

The ruling by the regulator will be announced after markets close this afternoon.

The CRTC held six days of hearings in June and heard from all of the major cable and telecom companies, which are divided on the issue.

Some want the regulator to limit exclusive content deals for TV programs, while others say it spurs innovation in the communications sector.

The issue arises from the consolidation of the Canadian communications sector in recent years.

Companies that broadcast TV programs and other content also control the wireless services, websites, cable TV lines and other ways consumers can access the content.

Some fear exclusive deals over content could hurt competitors and lessen choices for consumers.
