The CRTC says it will hold public consultations on the fate of a fund designed to support small-market TV programming.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission said spending on local programing, particularly news, has stagnated and even declined since the fund’s inception in 2009.
In the three years, cable and satellite companies have contributed over $300 million to support programming at 75 stations across the country.
The CRTC said it wants to assess whether the fund should be maintained, modified or cancelled.
What value can public consultation – as opposed to industry consultation – provide the CRTC on the local TV support issue? What do you think should become of this fund? Post your thoughts in our comment section.
