Canadians placed 235.1 million orders for both free and paid on-demand content in 2013—which works out to an average of 6.7 orders per person based on the latest population estimates—according to new CRTC data for the video-on-demand (VOD) industry.

Rogers led all BDUs with a library of 23,530 on-demand titles—a group that includes Canadian feature films in both official languages, as well as non-Canadian feature films and TV shows—followed by Shaw Communications (12,745 titles) and Bell ExpressVu (12,293).

Rogers also boasted the most feature films (9,484), followed by Shaw (6,545), Telus (6,261) and Bell ExpressVu (5,357). Not surprisingly, Vidéotron led all BDUs by making 449 Canadian French-language films available for on-demand viewing, as well as 2,454 non-Canadian feature films in French.

There were 191.9 million free on-demand orders placed in 2013, with Vidéotron amassing an industry-leading 101.3 million. Rogers was second with 48.7 million free orders, followed by Telus with 18.9 million orders.

Paid orders in 2013 totaled 43.2 million, with Shaw amassing 12.2 million of them. Vidéotron accounted for 9.9 million paid orders, followed by Rogers with 9.3 million. A total of $4.5 million was remitted to Canadian feature film rights holders for the year.
