Geek Street teaches kids tech in Toronto

Google Canada's street festival was more about coding than corn dogs

Geeks-in-training were treated to a street festival in Toronto on Thursday courtesy of Google Canada.

The media company invited 2,000 campers aged six to 15 from across the Greater Toronto Area to the event, called Geek Street, in the Distillery District. Instead of food trucks or carnival games, though, this street festival offered something different as the kids learned about coding and robotics.

Google set up booths to show the campers the latest innovations from Toronto’s technology scene, including an augmented reality bike ride and a lane of robots called Robotics Row. Throughout the day the company showed off different tech through a series of demos and held question-and-answer sessions so the kids could learn from Googlers and Google’s technology partners.

Google has previously held similar events in other cities, but this is the first time it has brought Geek Street to Canada.
