GlassBox Television has acquired CTV specialty channel Travel + Escape.

The move adds a new element to GlassBox’s current roster, which includes the comedy-themed specialty channel Bite, as well as the music and culture channel Aux.

“We’re about finding genres of content where we believe a cross-media approach adds value and there’s no question that travel fits the bill,” said GlassBox co-CEO Raja Khanna. “It’s the largest online industry on earth, so this is a phenomenal opportunity. “Canadians… do all of their travel research and booking online, so it’s a huge business. That process is only going to get better with the addition of video.”

Because Travel + Escape is a category one channel, Khanna said “it lets us really own that space on TV and speak to Canadians and hopefully become the trusted brand for travel research, planning and entertainment.”

While the target age demo for Bite and Aux is 18-49, Khanna said the company’s focus for the channel will be 35-55, “but there’s still a ton of overlap.”

The CRTC has approved the transaction and the channel will officially transition to GlassBox control by next fall.

Khanna said the company is already in planning and programming mode, commissioning shows and readying the channel’s multi-platform offering.
