The always-unpredictable Ricky Gervais was relatively tame in his return as Golden Globes host Sunday, but the first major event of awards show season still scored its highest ratings in three years for CTV.
The 73rd Golden Globe Awards attracted an average of 3.2 million viewers, according to overnight data from Numeris, a 3% increase over last year’s show and the most viewers since 2013.
The telecast was the most-watched program of the day in all key demos (2+, adults 18-49 and adults 25-54), with 9 million people watching at least part of the three-hour program.
It was Gervais’ first time hosting the event since 2012. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler served as hosts from 2013 to 2015.
Ratings for the show peaked at 8:55 p.m., with 3.8 million people tuning in to see Jon Hamm win his second Golden Globe in the Best Actor – TV Series, Drama category for his portrayal of ad man Don Draper in Mad Men.
The 2016 Golden Globes Arrival Special was the second most-watched entertainment program of the day, attracting 1.6 million viewers – a 16% increase over the previous years. Ratings were also up significantly in the A18-34 (+18%), A18-49 (+13%) and A25-54 (+10%) demos.
E!’s specials, Countdown to the Red Carpet, Live from the Red Carpet and E! After Party, attracted a combined total of almost 1 million viewers. CTV’s award show calendar continues with the 88th Academy Awards on Feb. 28, and The 2016 Juno Awards on April 3.
