Humber College wants its graduates to be ready for the real world, so the school is seeking media outlets to take part in a work placement project that will have its students researching potential advertisers for magazines, newspapers and websites.
The project has been designed for students in the final year of Humber’s two-year Advertising–Media Sales program.
In October and November of this year, students will spend one half-day each week at a media outlet assisting with prospecting. At the end of the two months students will produce a report on 10 qualified prospects, which they will turn over to both their professors and the media outlet.
“That’s when it becomes a win for the media outlets,” said Peter Stamp, who teaches media selling at Humber. “We’re looking for people who are excited about the possibility of getting free talent who will go after new business.”
“It’s not overly time consuming for the media outlet, though we do expect them to provide some direction,” he said.
Stamp explained the project is designed to create a “real world” experience for students, as many of Humber’s programs do.
“A critically important part of selling is, of course, prospecting for new business,” Stamp said. “We talk a lot about it in class, but in order for students to really grasp what prospecting is all about, we feel it is essential for them to get practical, ‘real world’ experience.”
