When Canada converted to digital TV from analog in 2011, a handful of Canadians opted not to make the switch. Instead – either because they don’t own a TV or prefer watching DVDs or TV online – they chose to abstain from regular TV subscription service and have snubbed cable, satellite or IPTV from the telecommunications companies. But how much of an impact are “cord cutters” actually making in Canada and the U.S.?
A recent report by Media Technology Monitor (MTM, a product of CBC/Radio-Canada Research and Analysis) called Some Canadians Have “Tuned Out from Regular TV Service explores how TV subscription services are being affected and provides statistics on the “tuned-out” segment.
MTM’s fall 2012 report surveyed 8,011 Canadians. While TV providers are understandably keeping a close eye on how many viewers are cutting – or perhaps never even installing – the TV cord and watching video online instead, it’s not a mainstream trend yet.
That said, it is picking up momentum with youth in Canada who are hungry for content.
