Three-and-a-half hour SNL 40 special averages 2.3 million viewers

No way was Global Television’s airing of the SNL 40th Anniversary Special (SNL 40) Sunday’s most-watched program. Way.

The three-and-a-half hour telecast attracted an average of 2.3 million viewers, winning the night nationally in both the 2+ and A18-49 demos according to preliminary data from Numeris.

The show, which saw the return of beloved skits like Will Ferrell’s Celebrity Jeopardy and Mike Myers’ Wayne’s World, as well as the return of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Jane Curtin to the Weekend Update desk, reached its peak at 8:20 p.m., with an average minute audience of 3.1 million viewers 2+.

In addition, the pre-show special SNL Red Carpet Live attracted more than 1 million viewers. In total, SNL Red Carpet Live and SNL 40 reached a total of 7.8 million viewers.

Global said live streaming of the event on GlobalTV.com generated three times as much traffic as the site’s weekly average, while page views to the SNL show site were four times greater.
