Greg Lutes, the former publisher of the Moncton Times & Transcript, has been hired to fill that position at the Halifax Daily News.

Lutes, who has a background in sales and marketing, says he’s up for the challenge.

“When there’s an opportunity to work in one of the top 10 markets in Canada, it’s a great opportunity,” says Lutes, whose family roots are in Moncton.

The Daily News is owned by Transcontinental Media Inc.

Lutes, who has also been vice-president of advertising and sales with Thomson Newspapers and publisher of Metro in Toronto, plans to spend a few weeks getting to know his new paper and the city to come up with a game plan.

“I have a sales and marketing background more than editorial and I think sales is one of the key issues that needs to be addressed,” he says.

“I don’t really want to set a level of expectation at this point. I really want to have some time and Transcontinental has given me the opportunity to come in and make my recommendations.”

Lutes succeeds Jamie Thomson, who was hired as publisher in July 2003 but left the Daily News last May to pursue other career opportunities.
