Marketing appoints David Thomas as editor-in-chief

Marketing has announced that David Thomas is now at the helm of the magazine’s editorial team. Thomas, a business journalism veteran who’s worked at Canada’s largest newspapers, joins Marketing as editor-in-chief following a three year tour as director of public affairs at the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada.

Lucy Collin, the magazine’s publisher, said Thomas’ experience as managing editor at the National Post and deputy editor of Report on Business made him well-suited for the position. “With David’s strong communications background and experience in content management, I am confident Marketing will continue to grow and evolve under his leadership,” she said.

Steve Maich, publisher and editor-in-chief of Sportsnet magazine, worked with Thomas at the National Post. He called Thomas a creative and talented editor.

“He knows how to get at the stories that readers are passionate about with great insight and style,” Maich said. “There is so much happening in the world of marketing right now, I can’t wait to see the directions he’ll take the magazine.”

Thomas fills the post vacated by Tom Gierasimczuk, who joined Canada Wide Media as director of audience development and editor-in-chief of BCBusiness in September.

Marketing‘s interim editor-in-chief David Brown has also been made executive editor of the Marketing Group, overseeing Marketing content as well as CARDonline, NLA and Monday Report.

“David Brown is our industry content master,” said Collin. “No one knows the marketing and advertising industry better – and David’s knowledge, relationships and skills as a brand builder made it an easy decision to appoint him.”

Thomas’ new role is effective Dec.17.
