Microsoft Canada has announced the appointment of Carlos de Torres as its new vice-president of advertising and online.

Torres is replacing Owen Sagness, who has taken a new role heading up Microsoft’s advertising team in London, U.K., as general manager of advertising and online.

Prior to accepting his new position, effective July 1, De Torres was the country manager for Microsoft Advertising in Spain. De Torres also previously held positions at the Spanish telecom company Telefónica Group, TPI (the Spanish version of the Yellow Pages) and AOL. He will report to Max Long, president of Microsoft Canada.

As the head of Microsoft Advertising in Canada, Torres will be tasked with “furthering preference for Windows” across multiple platforms in which Microsoft has a stake, including tablets, PCs, mobile phones and gaming consoles. De Torres said he’ll also be looking at “a number of digital advertising experiences on a variety of cross-screen opportunities including Bing, Skype, MSN, Xbox, Windows 8 and Windows Phone.”

In a statement Tuesday, de Torres said, “It is a privilege to join the Canadian team during these exciting times, and I will give my best to develop a strategic business for Microsoft in the coming years. I am very grateful for the opportunity and privilege to contribute to the growth of Microsoft here in Canada.”

A rep for Microsoft Canada said Sagness demonstrated a “deep commitment to evolving the digital marketing industry,” during his time at Microsoft Canada.

“The Canadian Advertising and Online team is happy that Owen will continue to bring this passion and dedication to his new role as GM for Advertising and Online in the UK. With this news, Microsoft gains a strong leader for the European market, and we fondly wish Owen all the best as he takes on this new challenge.”
