Noel Hulsman named head of media at Yahoo Canada

Journalism vet plans to focus on mobile, social and video

He’s covered everything from business to cars and overseen daily news, blogs and features. Now Noel Hulsman is ready to take on an even bigger mandate as head of media at Yahoo Canada.

Hulsman, who first joined the digital publisher in 2011, follows in the footsteps of predecessor Marie-Hélène Savard, who recently took on an expanded role of her own as head of international media.

In an email to Marketing, Huslman suggested a multi-platform approach to journalism will be more important than ever before as Yahoo seeks to compete for consumer attention against a growing number of sites.

“Editorially, we’re going to prioritize the pillars where we’ve traditionally excelled – Sports, Style, Finance and News. But, of course we have to continue to grow and engage our audience,” he said. “To do that, we need to excel in social, mobile and video. Those are the critical areas for us, and will be the focus of most of our efforts going forward.”

Some examples of Yahoo’s forays into those areas include the launch of Yahoo eSports last month, though the company is also making moves to distance its media assets from its technology products. Some of its digital magazines are also being cut as Yahoo continues on a plan to lay off 1,700 and close some offices globally.

Beyond his editorial expertise, which includes a stint editing BC Business, Hulsman also has a background in branded content, having lead the custom solutions group at the Globe and Mail.
