Raonic attracts record audience for Wimbledon final

Big weekend for TSN includes Euro 2016 final, UFC prelims

The Wimbledon men’s final was the most-watched tennis match ever in Canada, with an average audience of 1.6 million viewers witnessing Canadian Milos Raonic’s straight sets loss to Brit Andy Murray on TSN Sunday.

A reported 4.7 million viewers watched as Thornhill, Ont.’s Raonic became the first Canadian men’s singles player to compete in a Grand Slam final. Audiences peaked at 2.4 million during the match’s third set.

Raonic’s semi-final victory over Roger Federer on Friday attracted 766,000 viewers, making it the most-watched Wimbledon men’s semi-final. A total of 2.5 million viewers watched the match, with audiences peaking at 831,000 as Raonic served for the victory.

Later on Sunday, the UEFA Euro 2016 final between Portugal and France attracted an average audience of 2.4 million on TSN and RDS, making it the day’s most-watched program.

Canadians watched a combined 51.4 million hours of the month-long tournament, according to TSN, making it the most-watched UEFA Euro in Canadian television history.

Elsewhere, Saturday’s UFC 200 prelims attracted a combined 580,000 viewers on TSN (514,000) and RDS2 (66,000) to become the most-watched non pay-per-view UFC event on Canadian TV. A total of 1.1 million unique Canadians watched at least part of the event.
