Long-time Rogers Publishing head Steve Maich has been given an expanded role within Rogers Media.

Rogers Media president Rick Brace promoted Maich to senior vice-president of digital content and publishing, effective immediately. In his new role, Maich will be responsible for driving the media division’s digital strategy and growth including digital content creation, monetization and data development.

Maich will continue to oversee the company’s publishing operations, a role he has held since 2013. He will continue to report to Brace.

In a release, Brace described Maich as an “adept business leader” who has a deep understanding of storytelling and what content resonates with audiences. “He’s mastered the ability to marry his experience as both an executive and journalist,” said Brace. “Steve has done a tremendous job overseeing our magazine content, and I am confident he’ll deliver that same success with our digital business.”

Maich has amassed 20 years of experience in the media industry, 12 of which have been with Rogers. Prior to his role as SVP of publishing, he served as editor-in-chief and publisher of Sportsnet magazine and Sportsnet.ca, group publisher of its consumer business magazines (Canadian Business, Profit and MoneySense) and editor-in-chief of Canadian Business.

He also served as executive editor of Maclean’s, winning three National Magazine Awards.

He began his career with the Digby Courier in Nova Scotia before joining the Halifax-Chronicle Herald. Later stops included the National Post and Bloomberg News. Maich also co-authored the 2009 book The Ego Boom: Why the World Really Does Revolve Around You.

Rogers reported revenue growth of 6% for its media division for the three months ended June 30 – to $615 million from $582 million in the corresponding year-earlier period. The increase was primarily driven by higher revenue from Sportsnet and the success of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Rogers Media also owns Marketing and MarketingMag.ca.
