Rogers announces preliminary NHL broadcast schedule

Company promises twice the number of games available via over-the-air TV

Rogers has unveiled a partial broadcast schedule for the 2014-15 NHL season, with more than 200 of a planned 350 games announced this week.

The company says it will double the number of games available via over-the-air TV, and offer twice as many Saturday night games on a revamped Hockey Night in Canada spanning multiple networks.

Rogers will offer more than 350 national regular season games across nine networks: CBC, City, Sportsnet (East, Ontario, West and Pacific), Sportsnet ONE, Sportsnet 360 and FX Canada.

Games will air Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, with Wednesday games on Sportsnet, Sunday games on City and Saturday games divided among the nine networks.

The season commences Oct. 8 with Scotiabank Wednesday Night Hockey, featuring an Original Six match-up between the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs. All 35 Wednesday evening telecasts will feature at least one Canadian team, with nine all-Canadian matchups and nine doubleheaders.

The new-look Hockey Night in Canada, featuring new host George Stroumboulopoulos, debuts Oct. 11 with a slate of six games featuring all seven Canadian teams.

Rogers has not yet announced channel allocation for the Saturday games, but promises that there will be a minimum of four games each week, totaling more than 150 games over the course of the season.

Sunday Night Hockey, a new addition to the Canadian broadcast schedule, debuts Oct. 12 on City. Hosted by former HNIC host Ron MacLean, the weekly show is comprised of 25 broadcasts hosted from a different community rink in Canada, with 24 of the broadcasts featuring a Canadian team.

Rogers paid $5.2 billion for NHL rights through the 2025-26 season late last year.
