Rogers Communications has chosen Guy Laurence as the successor for outgoing president and CEO Nadir Mohamed.

It was announced Thursday morning that Laurence, who will step into the post on Dec. 2, 2013, will be the company’s new president and chief executive officer.

Laurence is currently CEO of telecommunications services provider Vodafone UK, a post he has held since 2008. He has risen through a succession of promotions since starting at Vodafone in 2000.

His career spans three decades in the media, pay television and telecommunications industries. Prior to Vodafone, Laurence held various executive leadership positions at a number of leading media companies, including MGM Studios.

Rogers Communications’ chairman of the board, Alan Horn, said in a release that the board came to a unanimous decision to select Laurence for the position. “Guy is a strong, proven executive who has consistently delivered strong financial and operating results in highly complex and competitive markets,” said Horn. “The breadth and depth of his experience in telecommunications, pay television and media are perfectly suited to Rogers and to the challenges and opportunities we see ahead.”

Rogers had conducted an international search to fill the role, which Mohamed announced earlier this year that he would leave. He is retiring when Laurence steps into the role in December.

Laurence said he plans to build on the strong foundation Mohamed built at Rogers “to compete and win in the market.” He also said “its unique mix of wireless, cable and media assets offer a brilliant platform to provide innovative service to Canadians.”

Mohamed was appointed Rogers CEO in March 2009, the company’s first CEO after the passing of  founder Ted Rogers in late 2008.

Laurence has reputation for fostering unconventional work environments, including doing away with offices and dress codes.
