Rogers Media to cut 200 staff amid ‘significant pressures’

Company says 200 TV, radio, publishing and admin jobs to be affected

Following news of cost cutting and layoffs at Postmedia and Metroland Media , Rogers Media has announced that it plans to trim approximately 200 positions representing 4% of its workforce.

The company, which operates a variety of media brands including City, Sportsnet, CHFI, 680 News, Chatelaine and Today’s Parent and associated digital properties, said that the media industry continues to experience “significant pressures” from a softening ad market, fierce competition from global players and shifting audience consumption.

The staff reductions will affect conventional TV, radio, publishing and back-office positions, said Rogers. The changes will begin in February, and conclude “as soon as possible,” it said.

“This was not an easy decision, but was right for our business long-term,” said the company in a statement. “There will be tough days ahead, but we will communicate as much as we can with our employees to keep them informed throughout this challenging time of transition.”

Rogers owns Marketing and MarketingMag.ca.
