There has been some strategic movement within the upper ranks of Maclean’s and Canadian Business, key properties within the Rogers Consumer Publishing portfolio.

Joe Chidley was appointed editor and associate publisher, special projects unit at Maclean’s and Canadian Business magazines.

Chidley, who served as editor of Canadian Business magazine since June 2000, will assume overall editorial responsibility for the two publications’ reports on higher education, including the annual Maclean’s University Rankings and Guide and Canadian Business magazine’s MBA guide. He will also oversee content for annual lists such as Canadian Business magazine’s Investor 500 ranking and the Rich 100 ranking.

“I’m delighted Joe has accepted this promotion so that we can further employ his talents,” said Ken Whyte, a vice-president at Rogers Consumer Publishing and publisher for both titles, in a release. “In particular, his leadership will ensure the continued growth of Maclean’s as the definitive Canadian voice on higher education.”

Chidley assumes responsibility for the Maclean’s education franchise during an exciting time of growth, according to the company. In addition to publishing the well-known University Rankings and Guidebook, Maclean’s launched its first-annual Student Survey issue in 2007 and the first Professional Schools issue last year. In addition, the OnCampus education channel was launched on Macleans.ca.

Steve Maich will assume the role of editor and associate publisher of Canadian Business.

Maich filled a variety of senior editorial roles at Maclean’s over the last six years. He most recently served as executive editor, leading the magazine’s coverage of business and economic matters, as well as writing the widely read weekly Econowatch column. Prior to that, he was senior editor and deputy managing editor at the current affairs weekly.

“Steve is a remarkably talented journalist with strong instincts for the kinds of stories Canadians want to read in print and digitally,” said Whyte. “Highly respected by readers and fellow editors, he is an ideal choice for leading Canadian Business magazine in its ninth decade of publishing.”

Maich, who co-authored the 2009 book The Ego Boom: Why The World Really Does Revolve Around You, will continue to contribute to business coverage at Maclean’s.

The appointments follow Whyte’s own appointment last month as a VP at Rogers Consumer Publishing, at which time his responsibilities as publisher and editor-in-chief at Maclean’s were expanded to include publisher responsibilities for Canadian Business, Profit, and MoneySense.
