Shomi: The data

Streaming video service releases aggregated user info to mark one-year-anniversary

While it won’t disclose subscriber numbers, over-the-top streaming service Shomi has released aggregated user data for the 12 months since being made available on a national basis.

The over-the-top streaming service – which is co-owned by Rogers Communications and Shaw – currently has a total of 17,698 episodes available to stream, including 118 series exclusive to the Canadian market.

The service has generated more than 143 million video plays, with Family Day in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario the most popular viewing holiday, ahead of Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Use of the service typically peaks between 9-11 p.m., while its top user has amassed 12,000 video views. Sunday viewing is typically 15% higher than the weekly average.

The most popular series on Shomi are Sons of Anarchy, Modern Family, 2 Broke Girls, Fresh Off the Boat, Vikings, Jane the Virgin, Empire, American Horror Story, Mr. Robot and New Girl.

The most popular movies are The Gift, The Divergent Series: Insurgent, Hop, Despicable Me and Empire State.

Comedy, kids and family, and drama are the most popular genres. Adam Sandler is the most searched actor, while Shailene Woodley is the most searched actress.

Originally launched in late 2014 as an exclusive service for Rogers and Shaw cable TV and internet customers, Shomi was opened up to the Canadian public last year. Its Canadian rival, Bell Media-owned CraveTV, was made available nationally at the beginning of the year.

Rogers also owns Marketing and MarketingMag.ca.
