St. Joseph acquires Torontoist blog

Award-winning Torontoist.com, the city blog that charts all things cultural, political, topical and fun in Ontario's capital, has been acquired by St. Joseph Media.

Award-winning Torontoist.com, the city blog that charts all things cultural, political, topical and fun in Ontario’s capital, has been acquired by St. Joseph Media.

“St. Joseph Media is the perfect home for Torontoist,” said Torontoist publisher Ken Hunt, in a statement. “It is a company where we will be able to retain the independent streak that makes Torontoist great, while having the support we need to grow and flourish. I couldn’t be more excited for what the future holds.”

St. Joseph has existing city-specific publications such as Toronto Life and Ottawa Magazine, as well as niche titles such as Wedding Bells and Fashion.

Terms for the deal where not disclosed.

This marks the second ownership change in the blog’s seven-year lifespan. In 2008, it split from its New York-based founder Gothamist Network (though it remains a Gothamist franchise) and went on to be run by Toronto’s Ink Truck Media. It also operates as a content partner with The Globe and Mail.

According to Torontoist, it receives between 10,000-15,000 readers daily.

In a post on the Torontoist this morning, Hunt said there will be little different under the new owners.

“The first thing that I told all of our contributors last night, and that I am telling our readers now, is that St. Joseph Media lovesĀ Torontoist,” he wrote. “Like my partners and myself at Ink Truck, they are not investing in something so that they can change it, they are investing in it so that it can continue to grow stronger and become more ambitious. The publication we all know and love is not changing in any fundamental way.”
