Returning to its independent roots, Hebdos Quebec, a long-standing not-for-profit association dedicated to French-language weeklies in the province, is saying so long to the two dominant publishers of weekly newspapers in Quebec – TC Media and Quebecor Media.

Together accounting for 127 French-language regional weeklies (TC Media’s 67 titles and Quebecor’s 57), the joint departure leaves 31 independent weeklies remaining in the association, said Gilber Paquette, executive director and marketing director at Hebdos Québec.

“The withdrawal of the two major press groups will allow Hebdos Québec to refocus its mission on services adapted to the independent press, whose needs often differ from those of major players,” said Angèle Marcoux-Prévost, chair of the board of directors, in the announcement released today.

The joint decision to withdraw from the association was unanimously approved at a board meeting on April 12.

Hebdos Québec was founded in 1932 by independent publishers.
