Twitter has confirmed the World Cup was an event of unmatched proportions for the social networking site.

The World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands brought on the most sustained traffic that Twitter has ever faced.

During the game’s last 15 minutes users were sending an average of more than 2,000 tweets per second. The game’s lone goal scored by Spain triggered 3,051 tweets per second.

Twitter said users from 172 countries tweeted in 27 different languages during the game and there were tweets in 23 languages from users in 81 countries when Spain’s goal was scored.

Over the course of the tournament, games involving Brazil consistently generated the most tweets, though Spain then took over from Brazil with the most tweets as the team progressed to its World Cup victory.

A record of 3,283 tweets per second was set during a match between Japan and Denmark.

The traffic was overwhelming at times, causing outages during big games.
