Several companies are hastily pulling ads from the British tabloid News of the World amid public disgust at allegations its employees hacked into the cellphones of missing schoolgirls and victims’ families in London’s 2005 transit attacks.

Virgin Holidays said Wednesday it has cancelled several ads due to run in the Sunday newspaper this week. Car makers Ford UK and Vauxhall and Halifax bank also said they have suspended advertising in the tabloid.

It was revealed on July 4 that News of the World in 2002 hacked into the phone messages of missing schoolgirl Milly Dowler, who was later found dead. Representatives of the newspaper even deleted messages when her mailbox filled up, in order to make room for more messages to be left.
