VMA viewership jumps 32%

Awards show telecast is Sunday's most-watched program in Canada

Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) telecast was the most-watched program in Canada among several key demographics, with the total average audience growing 32% to 788,000 according to preliminary numbers from Numeris.

The Bell Media program, which was carried on both Much and MTV, reached a total of 2.2 million viewers 2+ between 9 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., a 29% increase over last year. It was also the most-watched program of the night among adults and females 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54, as well as people 12-34.

The 8-9 p.m. pre-show attracted an average of 488,000 viewers, nearly twice the amount of 2014.

The #VMA and #VMAs hashtags also generated a combined total of 213 million social impressions in Canada.

The show was notable for an on-stage “feud” between Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus, and a rambling 11-minute speech by Kanye West – who used his time on stage after receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award to announce he would run for president in 2020.
