WestJet has launched its revamped in-flight entertainment system WestJet Connect, which features internet connectivity as well as more than 450 movies and TV programs, and is expected to offer advertising opportunities “down the road” according to a company spokesman.
The new system will be featured on all of the airline’s Boeing 767ER aircraft and an estimated 30% of its Boeing Next Generation 737 aircraft by the end of the year. The company said that installations on the “majority” of its 737 fleet are expected to be complete by 2016.
WestJet Connect launched this week with 85 movies and 329 TV programs, including expanded French content that can now be delivered directly to passengers’ mobile device.
The system requires users to have the latest version of the WestJet app installed on their device prior to boarding. The app takes them to the WestJet homepage, where they can access content. Seats on the WestJet Connect-equipped aircraft also feature 110-volt and/or USB power outlets, allowing passengers to power their devices during flights.
WestJet spokesperson Robert Palmer told Marketing that WestJet Connect would offer advertising opportunities “at some point in the future,” but did not specify what they would look like.
“This is an early iteration, and we are on day two of the service,” he said via e-mail. “We have not yet set a date but the short answer is yes, those opportunities will be available.”
The WestJet Connect content will be updated monthly, and will be available for free during an introductory period. The airline will also offer internet connectivity at an introductory price of $7.99 plus taxes, and will also offer $5 tablet rentals on flights longer than three hours and 20 minutes.
Marshall Wilmost, senior vice-president of marketing and digital for WestJet, said that the service will continue to evolve, with the airline planning to add additional movies and live TV channels, as well as a 3D moving map, games, books and e-magazines – including the airline’s in-flight title, WestJet Magazine.
