Canadians continue to cling to the security of the television set and the schedule it provides

As more screens surround our lives and technology serves up more entertainment options than ever before, Canadians continue to cling to the security of the television set and the schedule it provides.

Despite the ability to watch TV shows anytime, anywhere, 95% of programs will still be viewed live or within 24 hours of broadcast, regardless of whether they are being watched on a TV, computer, smartphone or tablet, according to Deloitte’s 2012 Technology, Media & Telecommunications Predictions report.

“Contrary to some expectations, technology has not shattered the TV schedule, but rather made it stronger by making it more flexible,” states the report.

And although more Canadians are watching video online, the average time spent in front of the tube by adults 18+ has been climbing. We’re watching 29.7 hours of TV per week on average, while seniors (55+) are averaging closer to 40 hours of TV viewing per week.

And, according to Deloitte, people are still watching commercials. Some 29.5% of homes nationwide have a PVR, but on average only 5% of adult viewing time is spent watching recorded playback. For most of us, we’re still searching the guide to find out what’s on right now.
