After six years with the company, Canadian Troy Young is stepping down as president of San Francisco-based Say Media at the end of the month. Young will remain involved with the company as a special advisor to CEO Matt Sanchez.
In a post on Say Media’s blog, SayDaily.com, Sanchez said Young is leaving to pursue opportunities outside of the company.
“Troy has been ready for the next chapter in his career and he has decided that now is the right time,” said Sanchez, noting that Young was “instrumental” in building the company into its current incarnation.
“There is no question that a big piece of Troy is in everything he has touched at Say, and although he will no longer be involved with the company on a day-to-day basis, he will continue his involvement with the team and me as special advisor to the CEO,” said Sanchez.
Young announced his departure on Twitter, Tuesday.
Responding to a series of best wishes via the social network, Young later tweeted “should quit my job more often. Might actually get some Twitter followers.”
Speaking with Marketing in 2010, shortly after Say Media had opened its Toronto office, Young characterized the company as a “melding of attention and influence.”
Based in San Francisco, Say Media has been building out content in the style, tech, lifestyle and food verticals. Its brand portfolio includes the female focused XoJane.com and the tech properties TechDirt.com and GearPatrol.com. According to a report on AdAge.com, the company has raised more than US$30 million in venture funding.
The company also announced that Kim Kelleher is stepping down as worldwide publisher of Time magazine to become Say’s president. Kelleher will join Say Media in September, and will be responsible for sales, marketing, media solutions and content operations based out of New York.
Sanchez said Kelleher stood out as an “unbelievable culture fit” with Say, and would make a “huge contribution” in the next phase of the company’s evolution.
