Free newspaper daily Metro announced today that it’s expanding to Winnipeg and London, Ont., effective April 4.

Both Metro Winnipeg and Metro London will target urbanites 18 to 49 and will be available through newspaper boxes and on-street promoters at high traffic areas in each city.

The projected total daily circulation for Winnipeg and London is 40,000 and 35,000, respectively.

“Our goal is to continuously improve and enhance our brand in an effort to reach the important target market of youthful, active metropolitans in every major market across Canada,” said Bill McDonald, president and publisher of Metro English Canada, in a release. “Metro’s expansion into Winnipeg and London is the natural next step towards achieving this goal.”

Metro reaches more than 1.4 million readers each day, across seven major markets (Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver). Both Metro Winnipeg and Metro London are joint ventures between Metro International S.A. and Torstar Corp.

According to a Newspaper Audience Databank (NADbank) study released in October, Metro is the second most-read newspaper in Toronto with 555,800 Monday to Friday readers (behind the Toronto Star with 963,100).
