Ben Plomion, the marketing executive who has overseen Chango‘s quirky branding and custom content design over the past four years, has left the company to join GumGum, an L.A. ad tech company known for its image overlay ads.
Plomion said his decision to leave was made independently of Chango’s recent acquisition by The Rubicon Project, and that his departure isn’t part of internal restructuring. He said that after several years building up Chango’s business prospects and marketing team, it was time to move on to a new opportunity.
He said that GumGum appealed to him because of its dominance in a fast-growing niche market for ad tech. It was one of the early entrants into in-image advertising in 2007, and has spent the last seven years deepening its specialization with advanced interactive creative and contextual targeting tools.“I thought it was the right time for me to jump in and help them build their marketing organization,” he said. He added that he plans to bring a big focus on creative content marketing, a strategy Chango was well known for.
GumGum is represented in Canada by Montreal’s Oboxmedia.
Chango founder Chris Sukornyk continues to lead the former Chango team as head of the Rubicon Buyer Cloud’s new intent marketing group, based in Toronto.
