The Exchange Lab has hired its first Canadian head of sales. Warren Jansons joined the company with ten years of media sales experience, most recently at TC Media, where he worked on direct digital and ad network sales.
CEO James Aitken said The Exchange Lab is expanding its Canadian sales presence thanks to rapid growth both north and south of the border. He said the private company grew its bottom line 40% globally from 2013 to 2014, and that much of that growth has come from its Toronto office, which is the hub of its North American operations.
Over the past decade Jansons has held senior sales roles at TC, Canoe.ca and Ad Splash Media. He continued on at Ad Splash after it was bought by YPG and merged with other properties to become its programmatic subsidiary, Mediative.
“He’s a perfect fit for us,” said Aitken. “He’s entrepreneurial — he was a shareholder at Ad Splash — plus he has some international sales experience over in London, and also leading sales at TC Media.”
Jansons will report to Richard Jones, the company’s head of sales for North America.
Thierry Bazay, The Exchange Lab’s general manager for Canada, left the company late last year. Aitken said the company has become more globally focused, so it will not be seeking a new regional GM for Canada.
“Thierry was instrumental in building up our business as we opened in North America,” Aitken said. “Now that we are focused more on global business, we no longer have that role.”
He said Bazay left the company on good terms, seeking opportunities elsewhere.
The Exchange Lab is a programmatic trading company that works with a large group of technology partners to buy ads across many different online ad exchanges. Its signature strategy is to treat programmatic media buying like stock trading, taking advantage of large-scale patterns in market demand to improve the cost-efficiency of buys.
