The cash-strapped CBC is putting Battle of the Blades and some of its other shows on ice as it grapples with a $225-million shortfall.

In addition to the skating competition series, the CBC says comedies Michael: Tuesdays & Thursdays and Insecurity will not be returning in the fall.

But the beleaguered broadcaster says its biggest hits will be back, including Arctic AirDragons’ Den22 Minutes,  Heartland, The Rick Mercer Report and Mr. D.

It also said it’s adding four new dramas, including Murdoch Mysteries, which jumps to CBC after being axed by Citytv, and the crime drama Cracked.

Also new is the historical drama Titanic: Blood and Steel from the team behind Camelot and The Tudors, and Over The Rainbow, a live musical theatre competition.

The broadcaster has said it expected to lay off more than 650 people over the next three years, after the federal government cut funding by about 10%.

The CBC previously announced the cancellation of the CBC News Network show Connect with Mark Kelley.
