Frank Buckley started as a travelling salesman and in 1978 replaced his father, who founded the iconic company, as president. Buckley appeared in several of the radio and TV spots for the famed “awful taste” ad campaign for the company’s cough syrup line and still gets asked for autographs today.

1. If you want to learn from a great marketer today, look at Tim Hortons. They have the product and the location.

2. If you can’t be smart, be quick. But always be honest.

3. If someone gave me the chance to change one thing about my career, I wouldn’t change a thing.

4. Government interference has been my professional nightmare.

5. For young people just starting their career, stay in one job long enough to learn what the hell you need to do to be successful!

6. My proudest achievement was receiving the Order of Canada and becoming the No. 1 brand in cough and cold remedies.

7. Do the things you do well yourself and hire somebody you trust to do the rest.

8. Hire the right man to do the job.

9. My father was the person that most influenced me in my life.

10. When you have a good idea, run with it. Don’t worry about the rest.
