Ontario’s NDP are up in arms about advertising done by Metrolinx, the provincial transit planning agency, and want the auditor general to investigate.

New Democrat Cheri DiNovo says Metrolinx spent $227,000 on television ads during last Sunday’s NFL conference championship games, and she wants the auditor to determine if taxpayers are getting value for money.

DiNovo says people want their transit dollars spent on transportation, not on glitzy ad campaigns.

She complains the Metrolinx campaign “conveniently coincides” with Premier Kathleen Wynne’s warning that new public transit construction won’t happen if the Liberals aren’t re-elected.

DiNovo calls it politicking, especially after Wynne and the Liberals have suggested voters will have to pay new taxes, tolls or fees to help pay for transit expansion.

But Wynne says people need information about what Metrolinx does, especially when the government is in the midst of a major campaign to build more transit.
