Social Revolution through Social Media Sonia Verma, Globe and Mail
On January 25, 2011, protesters in Egypt began demonstrating against the regime of President Mubarak. These protests were inspired by a social media campaign that began as a page on Facebook. This page, "We are all Khaled Said", was created by Wael Ghonim, head of Google's marketing team in Africa and the Middle East, commenting on the injustices in the death of Khaled Said in June of 2010.
Canadian journalist Sonia Verma has first hand knowledge of both the uprising and the power of social media. In February 2011, while covering the protests, Canadian journalists Sonia Verma and Patrick Martin were detained by Egyptian military at a checkpoint in Cairo. Sonia and Patrick reported on their experience using Twitter and continued to post updates in the days that followed.
In this presentation, Sonia will share her experiences in Egypt and discuss how the world of digital media and digital communications helped to create unprecedented social change in the Middle East. |
