Students from the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) offered up their creative interpretation for what Toronto means to them for the annual Astral Media Outdoor Student Design Competition.

The Canadian media company hosted the design competition earlier this month, giving third-year advertising students the opportunity to create inspirational messages for Toronto through outdoor advertisements. With a “My Toronto Is” theme, students were asked to create inspirational messages aimed at an 18-24 demographic.

Now in its third year, the competition lets students showcase their talents and show what Toronto means to them, said Val Meyer, vice-president of sales at Astral Media Outdoor.

Participants submitted their ads to their professors for academic review. A panel of judges—OCAD faculty members, Astral Media Outdoor representatives and industry professionals—selected the final four designs that will be displayed on 280 transit shelters across Toronto until May 8.

The final four inspirational designs were created by:

  • Barbara Solomon, Brooke Taylor, Katelynn Ubbi;

  • Je Jun Lee and Matthew Yoon

  • Julia Dickinson and Olivia Chow

  • Ilona Kozlova, Esther Lin, John Fong and Victoria Kouvchinova

Starting Thursday, people can vote for their favourite student designed advertisement at MyTorontoIs.com, and Mayor David Miller will unveil the winner at the Astral Media Outdoor Toronto street furniture showroom event, May 15. The winning team will receive a cash prize of $3,000 and a $2,000 donation to a charity of their choice. The winning ad will be placed in 70 transit shelters across the GTA, for the month of June.
