Yellow Pages Group has entered into an agreement with Twitter that gives the social media messaging platform access to Yellow Pages business listings and makes YPG the sole Canadian content partner for Twitter’s Places function.
The deal makes content from YPG’s recently launched public API available to Twitter users, who can use it to tag their Twitter messages with specific business locations. Fellow users who access tagged messages can click on the location tag, which opens a map and other information—including other tweets—about that location.
“If you want to know where your friends are or want to tag a location nearby, you can do that thanks to our database of businesses,” said Annie Marsolais, director of corporate and marketing communications for Yellow Pages Group.
By enabling an “Add My Location” feature, Twitter users ensure that a list of business locations in their surrounding area appears whenever they send out a tweet. Users can then choose the location with which they want to tag their message.
Marsolais said the partnership fits with YPG’s overall strategy of distributing its content through multiple outlets.
“It’s really the continuation of what YPG started doing a couple of years ago with the likes of Google, The Globe and Mail, CBC and so forth,” said Marsolais. “We’re making sure that no matter where people are looking for local information, they can access our content.
“At the end of the day, it’s also more potential leads to our advertisers.”
Twitter launched Twitter Places earlier this year and has partnered with content providers in various countries to enable its location-tagging function.
