For 87 years, the Marketing Awards have been Canada’s leading national awards recognizing excellence in advertising creative. Our primary goals are to promote the value of great advertising creative and demonstrate that world-class creative is being produced in Canada.

To be eligible for submission in the 2009 Marketing Awards, all entries must have been created by people working in the Canadian ad industry; however the work may have appeared in other markets. Entries must have appeared in a paid media format between January 1 and December 31, 2008.

The co-chairs were named by Marketing after extensive consultation with the previous year’s chairs. The jury was selected by the chairs in consultation with the senior staff at Marketing.

Over a three-day judging period, the jury examined 1,725 entries across 33 categories. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded to 129 entries. Thirteen Craft awards and one Best of Show winner were also chosen.

THE AWARDS GALA

The 2009 Marketing Awards Gala took place June 9, 2009 at Cineplex Varsity Theatres in Toronto. Winning work was showcased on the big screen with all Gold winners and the Best of Show winner receiving a Marketing ‘M’ trophy.

Months of effort by the Marketing team and many freelancers go into conducting, judging and creating the gala. But there are a few hardworking individuals who deserve extra mention: Tina Weston, call for entry and judging director; Chris Gray, technology manager at Adbeast; Melissa Archer, gala event manager; and Carlton Aylett and Fiona Christie, video producers at Krista Slack & Aylett Inc.

Marketing would also like to thank the teams that created this year’s Marketing Awards advertising campaign. Credit goes to our co-chairs and creative directors Patrick Scissons and Frédéric Girard, writer Craig Mcintosh from BBDO Canada, art director Jaimes Zentil from BBDO Canada and photographer Michael Graf from Graf Studios. A special thank you also goes to Frédéric Girard for creative design of the awards book and the art team at Cossette Montreal for jury illustration.

CANNES LIONS 2010

Marketing automatically enters all eligible Best of Show winners of our industry awards into the Cannes International Advertising Festival. This initiative aims to enhance the profile of Canada’s ad and marketing industry on the world stage.

The 2009 Marketing Awards Best of Show winner, “Share Our Billboard Campaign” created by Leo Burnett/Arc Worldwide, Toronto, will be entered at Cannes in 2010.
