One day after the announcement from Unisource Canada that it was unable to commsumate a takeover agreement with Gould Paper Canada, xpedx, the graphic arts distribution business of U.S.-based International Paper, stepped in and acquired the Gould Canada operations.

The Gould Paper Canada business, with three facilities and about 65 employees, will become part of xpedx Canada, headquartered in Brampton, Ontario. "This is an exciting opportunity for xpedx Canada to expand its market reach to three major western Canadian markets—Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton," noted Michael Kearney, vice president, xpedx Canada in a company release.

Gould Paper’s presence in Canada was short-lived. Gould Paper Corporation, headquartered in New York City, took over the former Cascades Resources facilities in November 2006. The properties became available when Australian-based PaperlinX, following its acquisition of Coast Paper, acquired Cascades Resources operations (now called Spicers) and the Canadian Competition Bureau ruled that PaperlinX had to divest the Cascades merchant businesses in British Columbia and Alberta.
