Canadian-based EcoLogo, a third-party eco-labeling program founded by the Federal Government and extending to a very broad range of products, has issued a revision of its Paper Products Standard and almost concurrently announced the first recipients of re-certification under the new standard, that being Cascades Fine Papers and specifically its Rolland Enviro100 family of products.

The new EcoLogo standard has a broader scope than other paper-related eco-initiatives which may focus primarily on forest management (FSC, SFI, PECF) or recycled content alone. The EcoLogo certification encompasses those criteria plus additional factors including whitening methods, water management and more.

“The EcoLogo Program has been working diligently on the revision of its Paper Products Standard, ensuring it goes beyond single aspects such as recycled content to cover multiple environmental impacts,” said Dr. Angela Griffiths, executive director of the EcoLogo Program in a release.

Papers eligible to qualify under the new EcoLogo standard include all printing, office and fine papers as well as newsprint. EcoLogo standards are developed in a transparent process over 12-18 months, and are designed so that only the top 20 percent of products available on the market can achieve certification.

EcoLogo is a Government of Canada official mark used under license from Environment Canada. The program is managed by TerraChoiceCP
